Synopsis

In 1909, four fearless entrepreneurs and then-un-known Irish writer James Joyce met in Trieste, the main port of the Austro-Hungarian empire, where he convinced them to expand their cinema business and invest in the opening of Ireland’s fi rst full time cine-ma. The Cinema Volta is not a historical documentary about the opening of a landmark cinema, but a light, spirited and modern personal search for the spirit of the people involved.

Director's statement

“We all know James Joyce a little bit, but we do not the entrepreneurs from Trieste who opened the Cinema Volta with him. I started from here to create this documentary. Then, I wanted to make a fi lm that was extremely Triestine, a tribute to my hometown and to the characters involved in the Cinema Volta’s adventure.”

Film walk: Grand Screens Through Time - A Journey Following the Footsteps of Cinema Halls in Gorizia

12. 10. 2024, Gorizia / Gorica at 16:00

With the project "Nostro cine quotidiano / Our Everyday Cinema," Kinoatelje is developing a unique cultural offering that will take visitors on a stroll through the streets of Gorizia, where they will uncover traces of cinematic culture. Inspired by the book Nostro cine quotidiano by Sandro Scandolara, the film walk branches out into five different paths, where the cinematic heritage merges with the life and environment of Gorizia. During the festival, a pilot edition of the walk will come to life, guiding us through the discovery of past cinema halls and leading us to the origins of film and its integration into the local community.

25 years of the Darko Bratina Award

"Two great personalities, Darko Bratina (1942-97) and Fulvio Tomizza (1935-99), left their mark on this beautiful and historically tumultuous region. Both passionately spoke about the shared life on both sides of the border, about the coexistence of nations and their diverse cultures, about mutual understanding and reciprocal tolerance. They believed that these are things that people can touch, cherish, and cultivate together. They believed that human eyes want to merge into one another like two neighbouring lakes. In the future common European home. To be together."

Statement by co-screenwriter, Jože Dolmark

Cinema nodes – Ceau, Cinema! x Tribute to a Vision installation

9. 10. 2024, BorGO Cinema (Gorizia / Gorica) at 15:00

Over the years, two distinct yet intertwined film festivals have taken root in different corners of Europe, quietly shaping the cinematic landscapes of their cities. Ceau, Cinema! in Timisoara, one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2023, and Tribute to a Vision, held in the border city of Nova Gorica / Gorizia, soon to hold the same title in 2025, have each cultivated a universe of films that reflect the identities and stories of their regions.

Ceau, Cinema! celebrates European cinema with a special focus on films from countries with historical minorities in the Banat region, while Tribute to a Vision embraces cross-border narratives, reflecting the diverse intersections of Italian and Slovenian culture, and more. Both festivals bring emerging filmmakers into the spotlight, showcasing short films that often serve as the first sparks of the cinema of tomorrow. What began as local celebrations of cinema has grown into something much more – each festival is its own universe of film.

This exhibition brings together the evolving networks of these two festivals, presented through immersive VR and 2D visuals. The films and the people behind them are revealed as what we might call constellations. And as these two festivals orbit closer, their universes are beginning to merge. As partners, Ceau, Cinema! and Tribute to a Vision will collaborate, expanding their horizons and the networks they’ve built over the years, becoming more vibrant and intertwined with every screening. Welcome to this evolving cinematic cosmos, where past, present, and future come together.

The project is part of the national cultural program “Timisoara – European Capital of Culture in 2023” and is financed through the Legacy Timisoara 2023 program, carried out by the Project Center of the Municipality of Timisoara, with amounts allocated from the state budget, through the budget of the Ministry of Culture.

Romania Between the Lines and Images

9. 10. 2024, BorGO Cinema (Gorizia / Gorica) at 16:00

Join filmmaker and poet Teona Galgoțiu as she explores the intricate relationship between poetry and film, focusing on her recurring themes: intimate relationships with others, the body as both a personal and conceptual space, dreams, fantasies, and the darker realms of the mind. This conversation will delve into how mental health, subconscious thoughts, and the body’s presence in her work come to life through the interweaving of poetic language and cinematic expression. How do these two mediums enhance the exploration of these deeply personal and universal themes?

Biography

Teona Galgoțiu (1998) is a Romanian film director and poet. Her short films have been screened at various festivals, including the Sarajevo Film Festival, the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, and the Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival. Since 2014, she has been part of the organizing team of the Super Festival, which focuses on educating teenagers through art, and she is the founder of Gura Mare, a platform dedicated to exploring poetry through interdisciplinary projects. In 2020, she debuted with her poetry collection I look back and it’s gone at OMG Publishing. At the Tribute to a Vision festival, she will present her short film Vreau să sparg sera (I Want to Shatter the Greenhouse, 2022, 20’) and her poetry.

Eclectic film

As we expand from the traditional cinema setting into the ancient heart of Gorizia, which has been transformed into a space of inspiration, creativity, vision, and innovation, we are thrilled to present a selection of four remarkable, thought-provoking films. Just as BorGO Cinema" symbolizes the revitalization of the city's old quarter and its change of purpose, the film selection seeks to reshape classic film viewing by immersing the audience in works that sit at the intersection of installation, experimentation, and meditation. In addition to the growing trend of reviving old, abandoned spaces and transforming them into urban, publicly accessible locations, this initiative also serves as a philosophical reflection. Through our unconventional films, we can finally establish a dialogue that emerges from the space itself and is dedicated to this fascinating phenomenon.

The installations will be on display twice daily from September 24th to October 12th, starting at 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
