Invitation to the masterclass with Nicolas Philibert

On Thursday, October 10th at 10:00 AM, a masterclass by Nicolas Philibert will take place at the Palazzo del Cinema in Gorizia. This year’s recipient of the Darko Bratina Award will share his approach to his work, in which he has documented the central paradigms driving the contemporary world over the last four decades, while creating an intimate connection between the camera and its subjects with a delicate approach. The conversation with the film director Philibert, moderated by Francesco Martinotti, President of the Italian National Association of Film Authors (Associazione Nazionale Autori Cinematografici), will also serve as an excellent introduction to the screening of the film Back to Normandy (2007, 113’), which will be screened at 12:00 PM.

The festival will present a selected filmography of Nicolas Philibert, who often explores the stigmatization of mental disorders. We are especially proud to be presenting this award on World Mental Health Day, in the year of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Franco Basaglia, a pioneer of psychiatric deinstitutionalization not only in Italy but across Europe. Basaglia revolutionized psychiatry, starting at the psychiatric hospital in Gorizia, where the Basaglia Park still operates today.

Later that day, at 8:00 PM, the Palazzo del Cinema will host the Darko Bratina Award ceremony, followed by a screening of the film On the Adamant (2023, 109’), for which the director won the Golden Bear at the 73rd Berlin Film Festival. The film presents a unique day centre for adults with mental disorders, where they, together with the staff, create an unconventional yet inclusive environment.
